The homecoming listings① by Baidu and Bilibili

Baidu Inc shares have closed flat② in their Hong Kong secondary listing debut③ last Tuesday, bucking④ a trend of first-day pops⑤ on the bourse⑥, as investors were wary of a fundraising flurry⑦ in the city and questioned the search company’s growth plans. Baidu shares closed at HK$252 each, which was in line with⑧ the price set for the Hong Kong listing. The weakened mood towards Chinese technology offerings was reinforced with video site Bilibili raising a lower-than-expected $2.6 billion in its secondary listing. The arrival in Hong Kong of Bilibili and Baidu, which both trade on New York’s Nasdaq, followed similar secondary listings by internet groups including Alibaba, JD.com and NetEase. (Reuters and The Financial Times)

Stunning discoveries at the Sanxingdui Ruins

Archaeologists say that the recently uncovered sites at the Sanxingdui Ruins date back 3,000 to 3,200 years. The latest finding was made by a joint team from the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute and Peking University. Archaeologists began excavating six sacrificial① pits② at the Sanxingdui Site in October after they were discovered between November 2019 and May 2021. They have unearthed more than 500 items, including fragments③ of gold masks, bird-shaped gold ornaments④, bronze heads, and ivory and jade tools. The treasures belonged to a highly-developed civilisation that may have lasted for thousands of years but never appeared in any historical records. Their quality and craftsmanship far exceed that of artefacts made at the same time in other parts of China, including the heartland of the Shang dynasty around the Yellow River plain. (South China Morning Post)

A massive cargo ship blocked the Suez Canal

A skyscraper①-sized container ship has become wedged② across Egypt’s Suez Canal and blocked all traffic in the vital waterway, threatening to disrupt a global shipping system already strained③ by the coronavirus pandemic. The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged ship that carries cargo between Asia and Europe, ran aground last Tuesday in the narrow, man-made canal dividing continental Africa from the Sinai Peninsula. The ship’s bow④ was touching the eastern wall⑤, while its stern⑥ looked lodged⑦ against the western wall—an extraordinary event that experts said they had never heard of happening before in the canal’s 150-year history. Tugboats⑧ strained⑨ last Wednesday to try to nudge⑩ the obstruction out of the way as ships hoping to enter the waterway began lining up in the Mediterranean and Red Seas. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the ship to become wedged. (AP)

EU leaders clashed over vaccine distribution

EU divisions over vaccine distribution were laid bare① at a summit last Thursday as governments failed to agree on how to provide additional jabs to member states in need of emergency supplies. Leaders clashed during a marathon video conference which ended with no resolution to demands from poorer eastern member states for part of 10m in additional BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines. Tense discussions broke down after demands from Austria’s chancellor Sebastian Kurz for additional vaccine supplies for Vienna were rejected by leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel. The dispute underscored growing disunity within the EU over the vaccine rollout② as leaders also debated tighter export curbs. Last week the commission proposed toughening the EU’s discretionary③ export controls as it seeks to push beneficiary④ countries, notably the UK, to share their own production. While Europe has exported more than 20?million doses to Britain, the bloc has so far sent fewer than 16?million doses to Germany, which is more populous. (The Financial Times)

Georgia law kicked off① partisan② battle over voting rights

The fight over US voting rights is emerging as one of the defining③conflicts of the Biden era, and Georgia fired the opening shot with a set of new restrictions underscoring the political, legal and financial clashes that will influence whether Republicans retake Congress and the White House. President Biden last Friday called Georgia’s new law an “attack on the Constitution,” and said the Justice Department was “taking a look” at Republican voting efforts in the state. In more than 24 states, Republican-led legislatures are advancing bills in a broad political effort that is the most aggressive attack on voting rights since the civil rights movement of the 1960s④. Georgia’s sweeping new provisions⑤, passed by a Republican-controlled Legislature last Thursday, represent the most substantive⑥ overhaul⑦ of a battleground state⑧’s voting system since last November’s election. It would impose stricter voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limit drop boxes, and forbid giving water and snacks to voters waiting in line. (The New York Times)
